A hard drive is a mechanical device for storing digital information.
The assembly consists of multiple magnetic discs and reading heads. The discs are spun using a carefully controlled motor, the reading head move back and forth to access digital information. The information is stored on the discs in an orderly layout using concentric rings that are divided up into segments called "sectors" . Binary numbers are encoded using a tiny magnetic charge. The entire assembly is housed in a sealed metal enclosure.Over the years, technology has come a long way to make these devices rugged but by nature they are still quite fragile. Dropping a hard drive could be the end of your precious data.
