How much should a website cost?
This is not an easy question but it is best answered by answering the question "What do you want your website to do?"
A simple one page place holder shouldn't cost much at all, I've put a one page site up and just charged little more than the hosting fee.
First you have to decide if you need a static or dynamic website. A static site remains the same after it leaves the designers hands. To update a static site you must call the designer and he/she will make changes for you. Often the changes required have nothing to do with the design but are updates or modifications to the content. Usually even simple updates will cost the website owner money and even worse they will be done at the website designers convenience.
So who would want a static website?
If your looking for a placeholder or the equivelent of an "online business card" then a static website may be good enough for your purposes, and if this is good enough you might want to consider a service provided by google. The google business center is a free service that puts your business on the internet complete with a map to your location, you don't even need your own website, but you will have to register.

Ok, so what's a dynamic website?
A dynamic website pulls it's content from a database and builds a web page on the fly. EBAY© is an extreme example of a dynamic website, the content is always changing but the design and layout remains the same. People who use Facebook© or MySpace© are already participating in a dynamic website.
Wouldn't it be great to be able to update your own content?
- If you are an artist you could add new images of your art
- If you are a musician you can upload a demo of that new tune!
- If you are a business you can post your hours, special events etc.
- If you are an organization you can publish your current information
